Why BarkBox Is A Fun Treat For The Whole Family
We’ve had our sweet little pug, Maggie, for about two years now and our girls are absolutely obsessed with her. They love to give her their toys – dolls, stuffed animals, nerf guns – but don’t love when the toys are ripped to shreds or covered in drool. My husband and I have explained to them a million times that their toys are not meant for the dog (and how giving her your Shopkins is not a very good idea). It goes without saying that this created a bit of a chewing problem for Maggie. I was commiserating with my next door neighbor about the kids’ toys ending up in the dog’s mouth and she suggested we try BarkBox, a monthly subscription box of various dog treats and toys. This sounded like a potential way to keep Maggie and my daughters playing nicely together, so we signed up.
BarkBox is a subscription service that delivers a new box of dog goodies directly to your door. It’s filled with durable dog toys and all-natural treats. Each month, they have a different theme, which Maggie doesn’t really notice (she’s happy with anything), but the girls absolutely love. One month was knights of the round table themed, and another revolved around New York with an adorable little Statue of Liberty ball and a pretzel rope for tug-of-war. When we first signed up, we told the girls how this was a surprise for Maggie, not for them, but it’s ultimately become a monthly treat for the whole family.
Whenever they see a box on the counter, they make a run for it and fight over who gets to rip it open to show Maggie what’s inside. They get a kick out of presenting her with each toy and telling her what each one is. This inevitably leads to the girls running around the house playing with Maggie and toys that are actually designed for dogs, not kids. Nothing makes the girls erupt in laughter more than when we tell them “that toy is ACTUALLY for the dog” — the toys are THAT cute they can’t get enough. We’ve even caught our youngest taking a couple of the toys and putting them in her pile.
BarkBox is not just filled with fun dog toys, but all-natural treats as well. This usually means a couple too many treats slipped to the dog when they think we aren’t looking. Maggie’s favorites so far have been the “Jurassic Pork” and “Frank’s Flank Steak” dog chew made with top-grade beef from Angus cows. The girls can even practice tricks with her, although we’re still working on explaining that she actually has to obey before she gets the treat. Getting these boxes has helped encourage the girls to play with Maggie more and make them feel like playtime is fun..
It’s been a few months now and every time the distinct brown box shows up in the mail, my daughters run to open it, Maggie trailing close behind. I can’t tell who’s more excited! BarkBox has become a fun treat for the whole family, and we always look forward to our next one.
