How to Take the Ultimate ‘Everything Shower’

How to Take the Ultimate ‘Everything Shower’

A loving, step-by-step guide

I’ll admit — I ‘m not immune to the kind of so-called magical thinking that makes me imagine that tomorrow, I’ll wake up an entirely new person. I believe in a hard reset. A ritual I can do that’s a kind of baptism — that makes me feel brand new. There are the burning ceremonies I perform under the full moon with the guidance of TikTok astrology girlies. There’s all the Palo Santo I burn. These are all well and good, but can feel too metaphorical. Too intangible. And few things feel more refreshing than an everything shower.

There are showers, and then there are Everything Showers — the self-care equivalent of hitting “reset” on your entire life. A standard shower is functional: you get in, get clean, get out. An Everything Shower? That’s a ritual, an event, an act of self-care and rebranding that transforms your bathroom into a personal spa. It’s about detoxing, de-stressing, and emerging as another self — or at the very least, someone who smells intoxicating and has baby-soft skin. And if I feel different, then perhaps I am different.

The Ritual of Reset

Historically, bathing has always been more than just about getting clean. Think: the ancient Roman baths, Japanese onsens, Moroccan hammams — cultures around the world have long treated bathing as a sacred, rejuvenating experience. And yet, in our modern, productivity-obsessed world, we’ve reduced it to a rushed five-minute rinse between meetings. While I adore a midday shower to boost my productivity and give me some time to myself in the middle of a remote work day, when I feel rushed by an impending zoom meeting, it’s far from a self-care moment.

Enter . . . The Everything Shower.

Just What is an Everything Shower?

An Everything Shower is the ultimate self-care day, a chance to shed dead skin, excess stress, and the emotional weight of the week. It’s for those days when you feel meh and need full-body rejuvenation — because let’s be real, sometimes your face mask and a quick shave simply aren’t enough.

More than just vanity, caring for your body is an extension of mental health care. We go all out on skincare for our face — slugging, retinol, chemical peels, you name it. But what about the other 90% of our skin? Your body deserves the same level of love and attention—and an Everything Shower is the perfect excuse to give it just that.

As a certified skincare girl, I extend that same care to my body. But often, I’m too busy to give it the attention it needs. That’s why Everything Showers are both highly practical and deeply relaxing. They give me a chance to finally indulge in my body care routine and check off those weekly maintenance rituals — leaving me feeling refreshed and renewed. Nothing is more indulgent than ending the day with an Everything Shower, pulling on a warm robe, then reading a book in flickering candlelight.

So set aside at least an hour — ideally, two. Yes, it takes that long! — light a candle, blast your “That Girl” playlist, and get ready for the deepest clean of your life.

By the time you step out, you’ll feel lighter, glowier, and like you just hit the reset button on life. Whether you’re prepping for a big week, a delish date, or simply need a self-care moment, the Everything Shower is a luxurious way to take care of yourself — because dammit, you deserve it.

Step 1: Dry Brush for a Full-Body Detox

Before you even think about stepping into the shower, grab a dry brush and gently brush your entire body in upward strokes. Dry brushing is basically exfoliation meets lymphatic drainage massage. It sloughs off dead skin, boosts circulation, and helps detox your body by stimulating the lymphatic system. For a softer experience, try a Japanese-inspired brush with medium or soft bristles. For a more practiced hand, I recommend anything with copper bristles.

Step 2: Do a Body Mask (Because Why Not?)

We slather our faces in masks constantly, but your body also deserves some TLC. Instead of dropping $$ on a fancy body mask, repurpose a face mask that’s too intense for your skin — we all have at least one at the back of our cabinets. The Aztec Indian Healing Clay Mask is too harsh for most people’s faces — but perfect for your legs, arms, and even your back.

Mix it with apple cider vinegar, slather it on, and let it pull all the toxins out while you move on to the next step. I like to do this after a sweaty, heated Pilates session to prevent acne and maximize the glow I get from my sweat.

Step 3: Oil Train Your Hair

While your body mask is doing its thing, it’s time to oil-train your hair. This step is essential if your hair tends to get greasy quickly. Adding oil to your scalp before washing can help regulate oil production in the long run.

Massage a nourishing oil — think coconut, rosemary, or argan oil — into your scalp and ends, letting it sit for at least 15 minutes.

Step 4: Do a Scalp Scrub

Now that your scalp is soaking in all that oil, it’s time to scrub away any buildup. A scalp scrub helps detox your roots, unclog hair follicles, and boost circulation for healthier, shinier hair.

Massage the scrub into your scalp in small, circular motions, letting it break down any product buildup or excess oil. Literally, tell me an experience that feels better than a scalp massage? You can’t.

Step 5: Double-Cleanse Your Hair

Yes, double-cleansing isn’t just for your face. After a scalp scrub and oil treatment, you’ll want to shampoo twice — the first wash removes oil and buildup, and the second then cleanses your hair.

Use a clarifying shampoo first, then follow up with a hydrating one to avoid drying out your strands.

Step 6: Condition Like a Pro

You know the drill — mid-lengths to ends only. Let it sit for a few minutes while you move on to the next step. I also like to apply a leave-in conditioner to extra-nourish my strands overnight.

Step 7: Scrub Your Body Like Your Life Depends on It

Now that you’ve removed your body mask, scrub away all the dead skin. The best DIY option? Brown sugar + coconut oil — a natural, affordable alternative to fancy scrubs. For extra exfoliation, use a loofah, exfoliating mitt, or dry brush to get rid of any lingering rough patches. You’ll want to leave this for last because you can also wash off any residue from your shampoo and conditioner with this step — preventing clogged pores.

Step 8: Follow Up With a Face Mask

With your pores wide open from the steam, now’s the best time for a deep-cleaning face mask. Clay masks help draw out impurities, while hydrating masks restore moisture.

Step 9: Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Before you hop out of the shower, take a gua sha or body roller and give yourself a quick lymphatic drainage massage. This helps improve circulation, release toxins, and reduce puffiness.

Step 10: Lock in the Moisture

For our final step, don’t waste all that pampering. Your skin is tender and has taken a beating. Add the moisture back into it with nourishing products. Towel off gently, then slather yourself in a rich body oil or butter while your skin is still damp. The final result? Silky, glowy, fresh-out-the-spa skin.
