The five liquid lipsticks that are sure to give you that ’90s look
Remember when everyone wore matte, brown lips and velcro shoes? I’ve never been a gloss girl. I’m a lipstick girl. I’m a matte girl. I love the richness of matte formulas and the longevity of matte colors on the lips. You can imagine, I was quite happy when the ’90s circled back into the makeup world. Give me some red matte lips and I’m in makeup heaven. But, as one would suspect, I’ve had my share of bad matte lipsticks. Liquid lipsticks are my favorite, but they tend to be miss or hit. I gravitate toward high-end liquid lipsticks because they tend to be less sticky and drying, but I’ve found plenty of drugstore and low-end brands that perform great.
Here are five matte liquid lipsticks that are are sure to give you that ’90’s pout à la Rachel from Friends or Gina from Martin.

Kat Von D
The Everlasting liquid lipstick ($27.95) by Kat Von D is actually everlasting. Probably one of the first liquid lipsticks I actually ended up repurchasing, this lippie has a smooth application that dries completely matte and remains put all day. The formula has no stickiness, and offers one of the largest color-ranges in the high-end market. (You can also use the product as an eyeliner.) From the darkest reds to the cult “Lolita” shade, Kat Von D’s formula is non-streaky and non-drying and one of the best liquid lippies out. (Everlasting Lip Liners compliment her liquid lipsticks perfectly, and are a great base for people who enjoy lining their lips first.)
Smashbox
Always on Matte liquid lipstick ($23.82) is another high-end brand that has one of the best matte formulas. Featuring a classic range of deep reds, purples, pinks, nudes, and browns, Smashbox has a color for every occasion. The formula features a Primer Oil complex designed to keep the lips nourished and soft throughout the wear. The precision tip applicators allows for an easy and flawless application. (“Out Loud” is one of the best brick-red shades I’ve ever used.)
Colourpop
Colourpop’s Ultra Matte lippie ($12.49) is affordable and performs like a high-end lipstick. Featuring a huge range of bright, nude, metallic, and deep colors, the line is perfect for anyone who wants to splurge on more than one color.
Too Faced
The Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick ($29.54) by Too Faced — wooooo! that’s a mouthful — is one of my favorite formulas because of its softness and suppleness once dried. The formula dries to a powder-like finish, completely matte, and undeniably comfortable and soft. (Look out for Mrs. Roper, a beautiful neon orange that is perfect for the warm-toned fall season.)
NYX Cosmetics
NYX, sold in Ulta, drugstores, and online, is one of those brands that is actually too good to be so cheap. Affordable prices are met with professional formulas and applications. NYX’s Luv Out Loud lippies are only $4.19 and have a great color payoff and dry-down.
Now give me some lip, bring out your inner ’90s baby, and rock this fall season!
