Love ‘Em or Hate ‘Em: Loafers Are Back

People are falling back in love with loafers after a few decades of this shoe being an outlier. Sneakers have dominated the casual shoe game since the ‘90s, pushing loafers into a dusty corner of the closet. But no more! They’re back, and while the shoe might not be everyone’s favorite, we’re welcoming them back with open… feet?
What Even Are Loafers?
You probably know what loafers are, but we want to define them more specifically. Are boat shoes loafers? Do all flats count as loafers? Could moccasins be considered a loafer? What about mules?
The simple definition is that loafers are structured flat shoes with a low heel, closed back, closed toe, and no laces or enclosures. Let’s rule out some of those shoes mentioned above:
- Flats: Not structured enough
- Moccasins/Slippers: Not structured enough and might have laces
- Boat Shoes: They have laces
- Mules: They don’t have backs
- Mary Jane Flats: They’re structured, but the enclosure is a no-go
- Derby/Oxford Shoes: They have laces
- Flat Espadrilles: Not structured enough
Loafers are the perfect balance between the flimsiness of flats and the durability and smart look of Oxfords.
However, there are exceptions to the rules. Some “slippers” are well-structured, allowing them to cross into the loafer category. And if you see boat shoes without laces, we’ll accept those as well. There are also hybrid shoes, like “loafer mules” or “loafer heels.” Those are fun plays on the loafer silhouette, but they’re not invited to our loafer party.
In essence, loafers are a casual silhouette with an elevated appearance, combining comfort and style. And that’s why we’re loafer lovers, and we’re not afraid to admit it.
Styling Loafers
We’re loyal loafer fans because of their versatility. They can be dressed up or worn with your most casual outfits, making them a closet staple. These are a few loafer outfits to inspire you.
Powerful and Poised
For ladies, nothing feels quite as fierce as a power suit. But other than heels, it can be tough to find a shoe that feels right. Flat can look wrecked in comparison to a strong suit silhouette. Booties are an okay option, but we love a loafer with a suit. Sara Walker gives us a cooler-than-Cruella look here with her leopard print loafers and espresso brown suit.
Everyday Errands
With certain outfits, the shoes are the difference between schlubby and chic. Aimee Song’s look here is a prime example:
Swap out those loafers for a pair of clogs, and it would feel more casual. But she rocks these simple black tassel loafers and gives us an everyday vibe with a ready-for-business flair. The wide pants and sweater keep things cozy, but the loafers and pop of red in the socks add pizzazz.
School Smarts
Our favorite way to style with loafers is with low socks and a laid-back skirt. This is a classic school-style outfit that never gets old. We like to pretend we’re a wealthy heiress starting at our new boarding school, but we’re already THAT girl. Josefine Vogt gives us impeccable smarty pants vibes with this fit:
And if you’re wondering if the bulky, lifted style counts as loafers, that’s a hell yes. She looks comfortable but elegant and ready for a picturesque ride through the park. (Peep the cute goats in slide 5)
Lazy But Cool
Aimee gives us another fab loafer look while taking her son to school. Apparently, he “insisted” they wear matching loafers, so he gets it. This outfit screams, “I’m a busy mom, but my closet is so good it doesn’t matter what I put on.”
The funky layered sweater with a button-down. The bed-sheet-like mini-skirt (or shorts? We can’t tell!). The scrunched crew socks. It’s a masterclass in messy fashion, and the loafers are what keep it from being too lazy-looking.
When in Doubt, Jeans
Once upon a time, wearing loafers with jeans was a faux pas. Now, it’s a safe style. But it doesn’t have to be too safe! Loafers with a pair of skinny jeans are a go-to, but we love what Stherfane Damasio is serving here:

The wider-cut jeans give this a streetwear edge, but the color-blocked tassel loafers reel it back in for a polished feel. It’s modern and fresh without being overly complicated. And the way she matches the top to the loafers is *chef’s kiss*.
Get a Pair, Girl
We’re thrilled loafers are back because they’re better than ever. Many top shoe brands have noticed the trend and joined the loafer team, giving us this classic shoe in refreshing styles. Here are a few of our favorites if you want a pair:
The Cara Loafer from TOMS has a slightly lifted look and comes in all the shades of brown our neutral-loving hearts could desire. As with all TOMS, they’re simple but stylish.
Quince’s Italian Suede Penny Loafer is a shining example of the more feminine vibe loafers can take on. The slim and dainty silhouette is elegant without losing the elements that define a loafer. And how can you not love suede?
This Crocodile Lug Loafer from Everlane has that animal edginess that brings weight to your outfit, making a bigger impact. It’s more eye-catching than plain leather for a robust style.
If anyone appreciates a loafer, it’s Steve Madden, and these Lando Cognac Suede loafers are calling to us. They’re bold but not loud, striking a beautiful balance between everyday and luxe.
In general, ALDO is underrated. The company has many interesting loafers, and the ALDO Francine loafer is a standout for us, with a layered but slim top and small details that amp up the style.
Sperry’s boat shoes are not loafers! But Sperry makes loafers, like the Seaport Penny Loafer, which comes in a shiny gold option that, if styled properly, is a dazzling choice. We recommend wearing it with other statement pieces for a daring look.
The Splend Edge Loafers from Clark’s are an effortless option without being boring. The shoe’s upper has a creative layered effect for a sophisticated look.
Zara’s Soft Loafers just barely leave the flats category and enter the loafers category, but they get there. And we adore the lowkey silhouette and soothing Sea Green hue.
Madewell’s G.H.BASS Whitney Weejuns® Penny Loafers are a playful style, and we adore the pastel pink option. They also come in a bold black-and-white style that compels us.
If you’re obsessed with Sara Walker’s leopard loafers, try Tory Burch’s Classic Lug Loafer in Leopard. They’re gorgeous and have the refined style Tory is all about.
Rothy’s is all about the flats, but these Rothy’s Lug Loafers are a departure from those flimsy shoes. The Merino Wool is a unique loafer material, and the subtle herringbone pattern is a lovely detail.
