What To Wear On Thanksgiving
After graduating high school, I quickly realized that Thanksgiving isn’t just about spending time with family…it’s about looking fine when you run into all of your old classmates again.
Because being home means you’re morally obligated to see the people you grew up with. Whether you participate in “Thanksgiving Eve,” where younger generations gather at bars to rehash old stories…or you all head to your high school’s football game to reunite.
Or maybe you’re forced to spend the holiday with your family…or your significant other’s family…and you just need to outclass the rest of the attendees, Thanksgiving is really all about your outfit.
And the other catch: your outfit needs to be comfortable enough to pack on a few extra inches during dinner.
Regardless of your Thanksgiving plans, I’m sure you’re excited to look your best in front of people you’ve known your whole life.
I get it because I’ve been there. I know the horror of returning to your hometown for the first time as a college freshman. I well know the jitters of facing everyone who’s wronged you…and wanting to prove that you’ve evolved.
So, if you’re looking to dress for revenge this Thanksgiving — and I know you are — here’s what to wear:
The Fun Turtleneck
What I like about the flowy turtleneck is that it’s flattering and isn’t constricting. This sweater says “I’ve matured” without trying too hard. I also like that you can wear any form of bottoms with these: skirts, leather leggings, jeans.
My main issue with a classic turtleneck is that I feel like I’m being squeezed to death. A looser take on the high neck makes it both chic and comfy enough to eat in.
Here are my favorites:
- Quince 100% Organic Cotton Mock Neck Sweater
- Spanx Turtleneck Tunic
- J. Crew Cotton Turtleneck Sweater
- Everlane The Boxy Turtleneck In Cashmere
Your Statement Jacket
There’s nothing that turns heads more than a statement coat. No matter if it’s a leather bomber, or a fur-trimmed floor duster, your jacket usually does more talking than your outfit.
Since the weather is finally getting colder, it’s time to find a fashionable piece of outerwear that speaks to you this winter…And no better time for its debut than when you see everyone you know for the first time in a year.
Here are my picks for this year’s jackets that will turn heads:
- UO Silence + Noise Yavonne Faux Fur Coat
- Free People Annice Faux Fur Coat
- Nour Hammour Freja Relaxed Belted Trench Coat
- By Anthropologie Long Shaggy Coat
Get Your Fancy Pants On
The key to a comfortable — and fashionable — Thanksgiving is a good pair of pants. You’ll be wearing these all day long, eating thousands of calories…So make it count.
In this case, I always opt for a pair of stylish leggings. Whether it’s leather, suede, or a fun print, pairing leggings with a sweater dress or oversized jumper is perfect for big meals.
These are the best leggings to wear on Thanksgiving:
- Athleta Elation Ultra High Rise Shine Legging
- Commando Faux Leather Legging
- Ann Taylor The Seamed Legging in Faux Suede
The Easy Sweater Dress
I’m partial to the sweater dress for Thanksgiving because it’s super easy. You don’t have to worry about matching your outfit…just throw on the sweater dress, a pair of boots and some tights, and you’re ready to go.
It’s comfy, keeps you toasty, and it can show off your own personal style. Lucky for you, sweater dresses are on trend this year…so there are plenty to choose from! Here are my picks:
- GAP CashSoft Rib Turtleneck Mini Sweater Dress
- Free People Ottoman Slouchy Tunic
- Free People Silvia Sweater Mini
- Free People Ava Pullover
These Boots Are Made For Walking
If you’re not feeling creative with this year’s outfit, my advice? Accessorize. Wear a killer bag, or some chunky statement jewelry to tie your look together.
This year, I’m seeing a resurgence in the popularity of boots. Whether it’s a retro leather bootie or a knee-high riding boot moment, they’re a must-have for winter.
So if you’re feeling like your skinny jeans are drab, or your dress needs extra flair…throw on a pair of heeled boots and strut your stuff! These are the cutest boots for winter 2024:
When In Doubt…Wear A Set
This is my ultimate advice for anyone who’s having trouble dressing themselves. It’s the quickest way to be satisfied with your outfit before leaving the house. A set has all the components of a matching outfit, doing all the hard work for you!
I am addicted to sets, and you should be too. Dress yourselves with little effort and frustration this Thanksgiving. Here are some comfy sets to gossip, eat, and serve in:
