Field Roast Smoked Apple Sage meat-free sausage is a vegetarian’s dream come true

Field Roast Smoked Apple Sage meat-free sausage is a vegetarian’s dream come true

I haven’t always been a meat-free gal, but in recent years I made the switch and am glad I did for a number of reasons. Over time, meat substitutes have gotten better and better in their taste and texture, and many meat-eaters I know can honestly say they enjoy vegetarian foods from time to time and don’t miss the meat at all. Or at least for that one meal anyhow.

I’m not one for necessarily seeking out meat-free foods that are trying to pretend they are meat – I’m not trying to eat meat – that’s the point. That said, the words smoked, apple, and sage, tempted me into picking up a package of Field Roast Smoked Apple Sage meat-free sausage at Whole Foods and boy was I glad I did.

Knowing Whole Foods only carries the best of the best – foods free of chemicals, artificial stuff, and additives our bodies don’t need – I knew these sausages would be good for me, but how would they taste? Once I got home and heated them up, I learned the answer was delicious!

As the company notes, their Smoked Apple Sage sausage is, “a savory combination of apples and sage anchored with Yukon gold potatoes with a subtle hint of hickory smoke.” Not to mention, all their vegetarian sausages are made using traditional sausage-making techniques, but their sausages use grain meat. They chop fresh veggies, potatoes, onion, and garlic, and add lemon juice, red wine, organic apple cider vinegar, and tempting seasonings like ginger, fennel seed, and sweet red pepper. Hey meat-devotees… is your mouth watering yet?

The first time I made the sausages I simply heated them up in the microwave, which was fine, but I found them to be even yummier when I warmed them up in a skillet with a smidge of olive oil. Eaten plain or served on a bun, Field Roast was a home run.

If Smoked Apple Sausage isn’t floating your boat, go for their Italian blend made with fresh eggplant, fennel, red wine, garlic, and sweet peppers, or the Mexican Chipotle, which is a spicy blend of smoked Chipotle peppers, Chili de Arbol peppers, chopped garlic, sweet onions, oregano, and cumin seed.

Field Roast also offers a juicy veggie burger which I have yet to try, as well as a meatloaf (meat-free, of course), veggie deli cuts, cutlets, franks, and more. Have a field day trying them all!
