Are Diet Sweeteners Actually Bad For You? Read To Find Out
In a world where everyone’s increasingly health-conscious and there’s such a glut of “healthy” beverage options – think diet sodas and zero-calorie drinks – diet sweeteners seem like a convenient alternative to traditional sugar. These so-called sugar substitutes promise the sweetness we crave – supposedly without the caloric consequences.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a new guideline as part of existing guidelines that aim for better eating habits in order to decrease the risk of chronic diseases. The recent guideline recommends against the use of non-sugar sweeteners (NSS).
Francesco Branca, the director of the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development at WHO says diet sweeteners don’t belong in a healthy diet.*
“The recommendation is based on the findings of a systematic review of the available evidence which suggests that use of NSS does not confer any long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children. Results of the review also suggest that there may be potential undesirable effects from long-term use of NSS, such as an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality in adults.”**
Sweeteners that the WHO advises against are: Acesulfame K; Aspartame; Advantame; Cyclamates; Neotame; Saccharin; Sucralose; and Stevia. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can switch back to sugar. The goal should be to cut back on both sugar and non-sugar sweeteners.
In an article published by The Washington Post, Marion Nestle, Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at NYU said:
“Everybody would be healthier eating less sugar. I mean, sugar doesn’t really do anything for your health. But, it adds to the pleasure of food.”***
